Vera Ferrara
Vera Ferrara was a mixed-race and multi-ethnic (Italian and Black American) jazz-club owner and former singer. Vocal nodules ended her performing career, after which she owned and managed The Session in Manhattan’s West Village. She met Charlie Rivera when he entered the club at thirteen and began allowing him to perform there at fourteen.
Career and The Session
Vera ran The Session with warmth and exacting musical standards. She admitted musicians on the strength of their talent rather than their age or credentials, but expected each performer to earn a place on the stage. Longtime bartender Reggie handled the bar and helped sustain the club’s community.
Vera’s vocal nodules developed gradually over years of professional singing and ended her performing career. Running The Session let her continue using the ear and standards she had developed onstage, even after she could no longer sing professionally. Under her management, the club became one of New York’s leading intimate jazz venues.
Relationships and Mentorships
Charlie Rivera
Charlie entered The Session alone at thirteen. Vera heard urgency and grief in his playing, along with instincts she associated with a much older jazz lineage rather than formal training alone. A middle-school band director had made room for his playing before her; Vera became another adult who welcomed it, allowing Charlie to perform at the club by fourteen.
Vera’s relationship with Charlie developed through years of performances at The Session. She treated him with longstanding familiarity, affection, and high expectations. During one later set, she put him onstage, warned him not to show off, and quietly monitored his food and juice intake when he nearly fainted afterward.
Jacob Keller and Logan Weston
On Jacob Keller’s earlier visit to The Session, Vera asked him to play, and he chose Bill Evans. Charlie had also told Vera about Logan Weston before bringing him to the club. When Jacob returned with Charlie and Logan, Vera recognized him; Charlie prompted a different performance during that visit.
As CRATB attracted wider attention, Vera rejected the music industry’s description of Jacob as a brooding genius. She corrected the label pointedly and without being asked whenever she encountered it, because she considered it inaccurate rather than as a favor to Jacob.
Physical Characteristics
Vera appeared to be in her fifties and was of average height. She had medium-brown skin with an olive cast that deepened in the sun and appeared cooler in winter. Her face had a strong jaw, high cheekbones, and lines concentrated around her eyes and the corners of her mouth. Her sharp eyes and expression carried much of the warmth she showed to musicians she knew.
Vera wore her dark hair natural, with silver shot through it, leaving it loose or pinning it loosely rather than concealing the silver. Her long fingers bore rings she kept on. Her hands showed little heavy manual wear. She could stand nearly motionless while listening, drawing attention without moving toward someone to claim it.
